Facebook Is No Longer Free!

Dear Facebook,

A friend introduced us in 2007 and it wasn’t long before I developed feelings for you. We started to hang out and get to know each other. You were always there for me. You have been so helpful and changed things in your life just to make my life a bit easier. Some changes were tougher to get used to than others, but the more I got used to the changes, the more I knew it was better for the relationship. It wasn’t long before I found myself falling for you.

I remember the time you helped network me with another local business I didn’t even know existed, or that time you helped me connect with a new friend from Missouri, whom I talk with frequently now. Oh, and if it weren’t for you, I would have missed connecting with that old friend who I haven’t seen in 12 years! Facebook, you have brought people together, helped people reignite old relationships and start new ones.

Facebook, you bring people together. I feel a sense of connection with those around me who I may not speak with on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. Life is busy and I don’t always get to enjoy the company of friends as much as I would like, but being able to connect on social media sites keeps me from getting cabin fever. 🙂

Facebook, we have be together for many years, but you aren’t the same person you used to be. You have grown in popularity and last year you decided to share yourself with the world when you became publicly traded. I feel that we are growing apart and you really don’t care about small business anymore. You have become a household name and now that you have investors to please, you seem to be more concerned with making a buck, than changing a life.

Facebook, you have been an amazing tool for small businesses to get their name out and with very little effort or advertising budget. However, Facebook, you have changed. The love we once shared has become glowing embers. Lately, it has become increasingly difficult for small businesses to use Facebook to grow their business.

I realize when managing a Facebook business page, one needs to grab the attention of other Facebook users. In order to get interaction, the post has to be attention-getting, even if it has absolutely nothing to do with the business. Correct me if I am wrong, but the less interaction a post receives, the less users that will likely see future posts, thus creating less interaction. You need interaction to create interaction. Now small businesses are forced to advertise on Facebook in order to gain interaction with users.

Facebook is no longer FREE!

I have enjoyed our time up until now, but I am beginning to see other people. There’s this other site I met called Google+. They too are free, but they don’t force me to advertise my business and bombard me with advertising. I am afraid you may have changed too much this time. 🙁

It’s not you, it’s me…
no wait, it’s you,
